Description
Hickory is the barbecue standard here in the state of Tennessee. There are two common types of Hickory here in middle Tennessee, Shagbark and Butternut (sometimes incorrectly referred to as bitter-nut). Shagbark Hickory is the third hardest wood in the USA coming in at nearly 28 million BTUs per cord (3 ricks), and Butternut is not far behind at just under 27 million BTUs per cord. Hickory is best known for BBQ here in the south but it is also great for heating a home, especially with a wood stove. Hickory burns up to 3x longer and 2x hotter than our standard mixed firewood. A couple things to remember when buying Hickory is it has an incredibly short storage life and can dry out too much in as little as 6 months, Hickory also burns hotter when it’s cut fresh, so we typically sell don’t split our Hickory too far in advance to try to keep it as green/fresh as possible. We recommend any Hickory to be used within the first 3 months after purchase, but if you plan on taking longer than that make sure to cover your Hickory with a tarp or cover to help lock in the moisture and keep it from drying out.
